ARC - The essential building blocks of all lessons

English is a skill-based subject, and an art form. For parents and students to better understand and remember these foundations, I call it ARC. Certainly, there is some explicit information to remember for language, and especially literature, but the study of both can be broken down into a few essential skills that need to be practised regularly in order to be successful. You would never hope to become a Picasso, a sports star or a professional musician unless you practised your art! Consequently, all of my lessons have the following skills at their core: 

• Analysis of the methods writers use to convey messages

• Recognition of the deeper, implied messages created by writers (Inference)

• Crafting of the student's own writing for clarity and effect
